Assessment:

It is important to assess students, in order to measure how they are improving, and where their difficulties lie. It is then imperative to be honest; otherwise you are doing more damage than good.

Ways to assess:

  • Correcting homework
  • Correcting class work
  • Monitoring
  • Tests

Correcting homework:

There are several ways in which you can correct homework: peer correction, teacher elicit answers from whole class, teacher provides a hand out with answers for quick correction and OHP answers.

Homework should always be provided, and students should be encouraged to do it. If they don’t then they just won’t improve very much. To help them to do it, you could get creative and provide the type of work they like doing:

  • Answer an email from you
  • Send each other chain emails
  • Exercises from  the workbook
  • Read a “Graded Reader” – you could ask them to discuss the chapters in pairs/groups and then ask them to do relevant exercises from the back of the book
  • Writing letters, reports, descriptions, etc

PROVIDE SOME FOR THEM TO SEE

Correcting class work:

This would depend if you wanted to correct straight away for accuracy or afterwards, not to break fluency or hold back the activity.

  • Peer correction
  • Teacher elicit answer
  • Hand out with answers
  • OHP
  • Correct on the spot. Remember try not to provide the answer straight away. See if   you can get them to say it. We often remember things easier if we work it out   ourselves.

Monitoring:

The teacher is always monitoring. It is important to keep any eye on them to see if they are struggling or if they understand, if they are motivated or bored. That way you can make the changes you need to as soon as possible. A teacher must use their intuition.

  • Correct on the spot
  • Take notes for correction after the task
  • Facilitate
  • Guide
